Gluten-Free Italy Guide

Italy is a wonderful place to travel gluten-free.  The best gluten-free pastas we have ever have have been from Italy.  Risotto is most often gluten-free and there is an abundance of seafood along the sea.  Remember one phrase "Senza Glutine" and you will be in great shape!
A few years back I road-tripped around Italy with my best friend.  We showed up in Italy with only a car reservation & a return flight - no hotels, no plans or anything.  What an adventure!  We stopped to take photos all along the way - in fields of flowers, in tiny little villages and even hit up the leaning tower of Pisa.  Eating Gluten Free in Italy, land of amazing bread & pasta was easier than I thought it would be:

At our 1st Gas Station stop I found salami that called out Senza Glutine!  I cut this out and brought it along the rest of the trip - it proved to be a lifesaver in communicating gluten-free to servers / cooks.

I took advantage of the fresh fruits & vegetables in the little markets, in addition to a LOT of proscuitto, cheese & wine!

Often the beginning of dinner looked like this - my plate was empty, while my best friend enjoyed the bread and pasta dishes to start.

Eventually the delicious main course would come (usually about 2 hours later :-)) and I would enjoy a beef & potato - in this case steak and rosemary olive oil potatoes.

Some restaurants were better than others & had an abundance of Risotto options - YUM!

Finally - there was delicious Gelato EVERYWHERE!   We stopped at least 3 times a day... what a treat!
